Commissioner (part-time positions)

International Commission for the Conservation of Atlantic Tunas

The International Commission for the Conservation of Atlantic Tunas is responsible for the conservation of tunas and tuna-like species in the Atlantic Ocean and adjacent seas. The organization was established under the International Convention for the Conservation of Atlantic Tunas in 1966 and is made up of 51 countries.

The International Commission for the Conservation of Atlantic Tunas undertakes a range of work required for the study and management of tunas and tuna-like fishes in the Atlantic. Such studies include research on biometry, ecology, and oceanography, with a principal focus on the effects of fishing on stock abundance. The Commission also undertakes work in the compilation of data for other fish species that are caught during tuna fishing ("bycatch," principally sharks), which are not investigated by another international fishery organization.

Members of Canada’s delegation to the Commission participate in one annual meeting per year, as well as a number of other working group meetings. They work to ensure that the management measures in place for species managed by the Commission are scientifically based and implement the precautionary and ecosystem based approaches. They also contribute to key science research activities aimed to increase understanding about Bluefin tuna, swordfish, and other species managed by the Commission, while also establishing capacity-building efforts to address the Commission’s rapid growth.

Per diem: $200-$250, plus travel and living expenses in accordance with Treasury Board guidelines

Education and Experience

  • Experience working in the Bluefin tuna or swordfish fishing industry, and/or the decision making related to management of Atlantic Bluefin tuna or swordfish and/or coastal management/marine conservation.

If you are selected for an interview, the following criteria will be assessed:

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Knowledge of the Bluefin tuna or swordfish fishing industry;
  • Ability to effectively take part in delegation meetings and assume an active role in deliberations;
  • Ability to represent, broadly, the interest of Canada with respect to the Tuna fishing industry;
  • Ability to work within a team; and
  • Ability to develop policy recommendations.

Language Requirements

Proficiency in both official languages would be preferred.
