Permanent Members, Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission,

Appointment Opportunities

We know that our country is stronger — and our government more effective — when decision-makers reflect Canada’s diversity. Moving forward, the Government of Canada will use an appointment process that is transparent and merit-based, strives for gender parity, and ensures that Indigenous Canadians and minority groups are properly represented in positions of leadership. We will continue to search for Canadians who reflect the values that we all embrace: inclusion, honesty, fiscal prudence, and generosity of spirit. Together, we will build a government as diverse as Canada.

The overarching goal of the Minister of Natural Resources is to ensure that our resource sector remains a source of jobs, prosperity, and opportunity within the context of a world that increasingly values sustainable practices and low carbon processes.

The Government of Canada is currently seeking applications from diverse and talented Canadians from across the country, who are interested in the following positions:

Permanent Members (part-time positions)

Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission

The Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission regulates the use of nuclear energy and materials to protect health, safety, security and the environment; to implement Canada’s international commitments on the peaceful use of nuclear energy; and to disseminate objective scientific, technical and regulatory information to the public.

The Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission (CNSC) makes independent, fair and transparent decisions on licensing nuclear related activities. Permanent Members participate in hearings and meetings of a quasi-judicial administrative tribunal. Members analyze and evaluate cases ,such as the licensing of major nuclear facilities ,(nuclear generating stations, uranium mines, nuclear waste facilities) being presented before the quasi-judicial body for purposes of rendering decisions in keeping with the discharge of his/her responsibility under the Nuclear Safety and Control Act. Members are also responsible for making regulations.

Cross-cultural sensitivity and excellent listening skills are critical when dealing with complex, science-based, and often emotionally charged matters. Members have a crucial role of preventing unreasonable risks to the environment, the safety and health of persons and national security, and achieving conformity with international obligations to which Canada has agreed. Members must have a clear understanding of the mandate and powers of the Commission and convey this understanding to the organization, stakeholders and the Canadian public. Members must act fairly and transparently, and render decisions that are based on the evidence presented.

Members must demonstrate the ability to respond to a wide range of stakeholders in a professional, concerned and balanced manner at all times. Strong conceptual skills are required to identify trends, interpret complex and sometimes conflicting information and to appreciate the significance of the data obtained and to make the appropriate legal and regulatory decisions based on science, facts and evidence.

The Commission operates with appropriate independence from political direction while ensuring sound management and government practices within the legislation and guidelines of the Government of Canada.

Further details about the organization and its activities can be found on the Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission's website.
