Canada Lands Company Limited
Canada Lands Company Limited is a federal Crown corporation with the following three subsidiaries: 1) Canada Lands Company CLC Limited ensures the commercially oriented, orderly disposition of surplus former Government of Canada properties, optimizing their financial and community value, and owns and operates the CN Tower; 2) Old Port of Montréal Corporation Inc. owns and operates the Old Port of Montréal and the Montréal Science Centre, and 3) Parc Downsview Park Inc. owns Downsview Park in Toronto and the Downsview Lands. operates and maintains the park plus associated recreation facilities and is in the process of developing the surrounding lands for housing and commercial purposes. Through community consultation and partnering with the private sector, Canada Lands Company Limited, its subsidiaries, and their respective employees apply real estate expertise, creative property solutions and effective and innovative management of the assets it holds for the long term to deliver lasting value for Canadians and a financial dividend to the federal consolidated revenue fund.
Board members are responsible for recommending the corporation's strategic direction; evaluating its performance; safeguarding the corporation’s assets; and reporting to the Crown on the corporation’s activities and performance. Specific roles and responsibilities of the corporation’s Board members are as follows:
- Promote a culture of integrity, ethical business conduct and corporate social responsibility throughout the corporation;
- Facilitate the achievement of long-term goals by overseeing the corporation’s strategic planning processes;
- Identify emerging issues that may affect the corporation;
- Ensure adequate systems are in place to evaluate, monitor, and manage the principal risks facing the corporation;
- Oversee the appointment, assessment and discharge of the President and Chief Executive Officer, regularly review the management succession plan, and promote programs to develop leadership throughout the corporation;
- Ensure the integrity of the corporation’s information systems and management practices; and
- Ensure that timely information is provided to the Government of Canada, through the Minister, accurately reflecting the corporation’s state of operations, annual performance and plans for the future.
In particular, Canada Lands is seeking candidates who have a background in one or more of the following areas to fill current vacancies: auditing large, complex organizations, with a Chartered Professional Accountant designation; real estate; and/or attractions, tourism or hospitality. Other applications with different experiences and expertise will be accepted.

Per Diem: $310 - $375
Annual Retainer: $3,600 - $4,500

Education and Experience
- A degree from a recognized university in a relevant field of study or an applicable combination of education, experience, and/or job-related training;
- Governance experience serving as a member of a board of directors of a government organization, non-profit organization, and/or a private sector organization;
- Board members must have experience that responds to one or more of the following criteria:
- Extensive experience in the real estate industry;
- Extensive experience in the attractions, tourism or hospitality industry;
- Working as a commercial or real estate lawyer;
- Extensive experience in urban planning, architecture, or civil engineering; or
- Experience in municipal official planning, zoning and land development approvals processes.
- Board members must have experience at the executive level in one or more of the following management areas:
- Managing the human resources function of a large corporation, including determining human resources strategies to reach corporate objectives; hiring and retaining appropriate resources; and setting principles and policies for compensation;
- Managing the legal, risk or compliance component of a large corporation;
- Experience monitoring corporate performance against strategic and business plans, including assessing operating results to evaluate whether the business is being properly managed;
- Auditing large, complex organizations, with a Certified Professional Accountant designation. Experience in or interacting with the Office of the Auditor General of Canada will be considered an asset.
- Experience in managing or directing workplace environments with a union component will be considered an asset; and
- Experience in working with Indigenous communities or businesses will be considered an asset.
If you are selected for an interview, the following criteria will be assessed:
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
- Knowledge of financial planning and reporting processes and ability to read and understand financial statements;
- Knowledge of the roles and responsibilities of the Chairperson, the Board of Directors, and the President and Chief Executive Officer, including the corporation’s fundamental accountabilities to the shareholder and taxpayers, will be considered an asset;
- Knowledge of the Canada Business Corporations Act and the Financial Administration Act will be considered an asset;
- Knowledge of principles and best practices in corporate governance; public policy development; financial and risk management; human resources; corporate planning and reporting; or performance management will be considered an asset;
- Ability to provide corporate vision and strategic direction needed for Canada Lands Company Limited to fulfill its mandate and attain its objectives effectively and efficiently;
- Ability to develop effective relationships with a Chairperson, President and Chief Executive Officer, fellow Directors and senior management of Canada Lands Company Limited;
- Ability to recognize and address emerging issues, actions to seize opportunities, and to advance ideas;
- Superior communication skills, both written and oral; and
- Ability to analyze complex issues, think strategically, and balance the business needs of the organization with the public interest.
Language Requirements
Proficiency in both official languages would be preferred.

- You are willing to travel to Toronto and possibly other cities across Canada for Board meetings.
- You may be required to attend additional meetings and events, as deemed appropriate by the Board of Directors.
