Laurentian Pilotage Authority Canada
The Laurentian Pilotage Authority Canada (Laurentian Pilotage Authority) is a Crown corporation based in Montreal, Quebec. The mandate of the Laurentian Pilotage Authority is to operate, maintain and manage, in the interest of navigation safety, an effective pilotage service in the Canadian waters for the Laurentian region. The Laurentian Pilotage Authority exercises public regulatory authority, and also issues, suspends or revokes pilot licenses and certificates.
The Laurentian Pilotage Authority has set three key objectives to carry out its mandate:
- To achieve and maintain financial self-sufficiency
- To work with its partners and service providers to maximize the efficiency, quality and safety of pilotage services, by being attentive to client needs and
- To heed and to comply with the policies and initiatives of the Government of Canada, especially in technological and economic matters.
The Board is responsible for the Laurentian Pilotage Authority’s strategic planning, including its business plan, finances and overall stewardship, which involves the identification of major risks, succession planning and the setting up of an information system to meet its requirements.

Per Diem: $220 - $260
Annual Retainer: $2,900 - $3,400

To be considered for one of these positions, please provide concrete examples from your career that clearly demonstrate how you meet the following requirements in your application:
Education and Experience
- A degree from a recognized university in a relevant field of study, or an acceptable combination of equivalent education, job-related training or experience;
- Experience serving as a member of a board of directors for a public or private sector organization or as a senior leader answerable to stakeholders in the public or private sector;
- Experience in dealing with senior representatives of government or the private sector;
- Experience in pilotage, shipping, other transportation sectors or business community (preferably marine); and
- Experience in one or more of the following areas would be considered as assets: project management engineering risk management information systems marine transportation public relations business administration law communications community relations or stakeholder engagement.
If you are selected for an interview, the following criteria will be assessed:
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
- Knowledge of the Authority’s mandate, mission, strategic priorities, and business activities including the Canadian maritime industry;
- Knowledge of the role and responsibilities of a board member, including fundamental accountabilities to the Government of Canada as shareholder;
- Knowledge of the public policy environment facing a Crown corporation, and a general understanding of the legislative environment in which it operates, including the Financial Administration Act and the Pilotage Act;
- Knowledge of financial and human resources management (including compensation), strategic corporate planning, monitoring, and evaluation of corporate performance and of corporate governance, including good governance and best practices;
- Knowledge in one or more of the following areas may be required: operation of a Pilotage Authority international trade finance, business administration, commerce or economics real property management strategic planning;
- Financial literacy;
- Ability to identify, analyse and define priorities and strategies;
- Ability to anticipate emerging issues;
- Ability to develop and maintain effective working relationships with other members and with the Authority’s partners and stakeholders; and
- Superior communications skills, both oral and written, and the ability to manage communications with a variety of stakeholders.
Language Requirements
Proficiency in both official languages would be preferred.

- No officer or employee of the Laurentian Pilotage Authority or any of its affiliates, other than the chief executive officer, shall be a director of the Laurentian Pilotage Authority (statutory).
