Canadian Dairy Commission

The Canadian Dairy Commission is a federal Crown corporation. Funded by the federal government, producers and the marketplace, the Commission strives to balance and serve the interests of all dairy stakeholders - producers, processors, further processors, exporters, consumers and governments.

Under the Canadian Dairy Commission Act, the Commission's legislated objectives are to provide efficient producers of milk and cream with the opportunity to obtain a fair return for their labour and investment, and to provide consumers of dairy products with a continuous and adequate supply of dairy products of high quality. As a central facilitator for the Canadian dairy industry and administrator of national dairy programs, the Commission works closely with industry stakeholders represented by organizations such as the Dairy Farmers of Canada, Dairy Processors Association of Canada, Consumers’ Association of Canada and provincial milk marketing boards and agencies.

Per diem: $275 - $325

To be considered for this position, please provide examples from your career that clearly demonstrate how you meet the following requirements in your application:

Education and Experience

  • A degree from a recognized university in a relevant field of study or an acceptable combination of equivalent education, job-related training and/or experience;
  • Significant experience in the dairy production sector;
  • Experience in dealing with federal or provincial governments, stakeholders or agencies; and
  • Corporate governance or financial certification training and previous experience as a member on a board of directors would be considered assets.

If you are selected for an interview, the following criteria will be assessed:

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • A good understanding of the business, political, economic and operational challenges and opportunities facing the Canadian Dairy industry;
  • Knowledge of sound governance principles, strategic planning, monitoring performance and evaluation risk;
  • Knowledge of the Canadian Dairy Commission’s mandate, legislative framework and activities;
  • Ability to quickly grasp complex issues and their potential impact on the dairy industry stakeholders;
  • Strong negotiating skills and the ability to bridge differing viewpoints;
  • Ability to establish, sustain and foster relationships;
  • Superior communication skills, both written and oral; and
  • Strong analytical skills and the ability to understand, interpret and evaluate financial statements and budgets.

Language Requirements

Proficiency in both official languages would be preferred

Eligibility Factors and Conditions of Employment

In your application, it will be important that you confirm you meet the following requirements:

  • You are required to attend Commission meetings, Audit Committee meetings and the Canadian Milk Supply Management Committee meetings. The time commitment required of the Commissioner is approximately 36 to 50 days per year. This includes travel time and meeting attendance.
  • You may be required to attend additional meetings and events with stakeholders and other as deemed appropriate by the Commission.
  • You may be required to act as the Chairperson in the absence or incapacity of the Chairperson.
