Director (Chief Executive Officer) (full-time position)
Canadian Museum of Immigration at Pier 21
The Canadian Museum of Immigration at Pier 21 was established as a federal Crown corporation under the Museums Act in June 2010. Located at Pier 21, a national historic site in Halifax, Nova Scotia, this national institution and member of the Canadian Heritage Portfolio is responsible for exploring the theme of immigration to Canada in order to enhance public understanding of the experiences of immigrants as they arrived in Canada, of the vital role immigration has played in the building of Canada and of the contributions of immigrants to Canada’s culture, economy and way of life.
The Director is the Chief Executive Officer and is responsible, under the direction of the Board, for providing corporate leadership for the management of the Museum’s resources and assets and for the effectiveness and efficiency of its operations in meeting its mandated objectives.

Salary Range: $179,200 - $210,800

Education and Experience
- A degree from a recognized university in a relevant field of study or an acceptable combination of relevant education, job-related training and/or experience
- Corporate leadership experience at the chief executive officer or senior executive level
- Experience in financial management and revenue generation
- Significant experience in major fundraising initiatives and establishing collaborative relationships
- Experience in establishing and implementing strategic vision and change management at senior levels
- Leadership experience in national outreach initiatives
- Experience in reporting to, serving and engaging a board
- Experience in dealing with government, preferably with senior government officials would be an asset and
- Experience in implementing digital/virtual access to heritage programs and artifacts would also be an asset.
If you are selected for an interview, the following criteria will be assessed:
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
- Knowledge of the Canadian Museum of Immigration at Pier 21 mandate, of the Museums Act and other relevant federal legislation
- Knowledge of current challenges and opportunities for Canadian cultural institutions
- Knowledge of the government’s policy agenda and how it relates to the national museums
- Financial literacy and knowledge of sound governance and management of principles and practices
- Knowledge of the cultural, patrimonial and/or recreational tourism sectors would be an asset
- Knowledge of the transformation to digital culture would also be an asset
- Knowledge of immigration issues in Canada would also be an asset
- Ability to provide corporate vision, leadership and strategic direction needed to ensure the Canadian Museum of Immigration at Pier 21 is able to carry out its mandate and achieve its objectives
- Ability to identify, analyze and define priorities and strategies
- Ability to spearhead national outreach initiatives and actively market and promote the Museum’s brand to audiences across Canada
- Ability to focus the energies and talents of the employees of the Canadian Museum of Immigration at Pier 21 and motivate them to achieve corporate objectives
- Ability to develop effective working relationships with the Board of Trustees, the Museum’s management, the Minister of Canadian Heritage and her Office, the Deputy Minister of Canadian Heritage, and the Museum’s key stakeholders and partners
- Superior communication skills, both written and oral and
- Ability to act as the spokesperson in representing the Canadian Museum of Immigration at Pier 21 with stakeholders, media, public institutions, governments and other organizations.
Language Proficiency
Proficiency in both official languages would be preferred.
