Directors (part-time positions)

Farm Credit Canada

Farm Credit Canada is Canada’s leading provider of financial and business services tailored to the agriculture and agri-food industry. Farm Credit Canada is self-sustaining and projects long-term viability through sound financial and risk management practices. As a prudent lender with 23 consecutive years of growth, a $28 billion loan portfolio and 100,000 customers across Canada, Farm Credit Canada, through its more than 1,700 employees, contributes to the strength and stability of the agriculture industry.

The Farm Credit Canada Board of Directors represents the breadth of Canadian agriculture. The Board ensures that Farm Credit Canada remains focused on its vision, mission and values, and fulfilling its public policy role. The Board is responsible for the overall governance of the corporation. The Board is composed of 12 members, including the President and CEO, and the Chairperson.

Per Diem: $410 - $485

Annual retainer: $5,300 - $6,200

Directors who serve as Chair of a Sub-Committee of the board receive an additional annual retainer of $1,000.

Official Languages and Diversity

To be considered for one of these positions, please provide examples from your career that clearly demonstrate how you meet the following requirements in your application:

Education and Experience

  • A degree from a recognized university in a relevant field of study or an acceptable combination of education, job related training and or experience;
  • Experience in gathering and analyzing complex information in support of decision making;
  • Experience in a hands on customer-facing operation preferably in a credit granting function;
  • Experience serving as a member of a Board of Directors for a public or private sector organization, would be an asset;
  • Experience in dealing with the federal government, preferably with senior government officials, would be an asset;
  • Experience identifying the business risks and opportunities associated with technological innovation, would be an asset; and
  • Experience in one or more of the following:
    • Senior management experience in a multiple-branch, credit-granting retail financial institution; and/or
    • Experience in agriculture (farming, primary producer, agri-business, agri-food, co-operatives, federations and rural associations); and/or
    • Experience in modern corporate governance; and/or
    • Experience in risk oversight and risk management.

If you are selected for an interview, the following criteria will be assessed:

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Knowledge of Farm Credit Canada's mandate, legislative framework and activities;
  • Knowledge and understanding of financial management principles such as:
    • equity financing;
    • venture capital financing;
    • financial services;
    • financial administration;
    • investments and lending; and/or
    • accounting.
  • Knowledge of the agriculture industry;
  • Knowledge of financial institutions risk issues would be an asset;
  • Ability to reconcile varying interests and values;
  • Ability to develop and maintain effective working relationships; and
  • Superior communication skills, both written and oral.

Language Requirements

Proficiency in both official languages would be preferred.

Eligibility Factors and Conditions of Employment

In your application, it will be important that you confirm you meet the following requirements:

  • The successful candidate must possess an ability and willingness to travel to all regions of Canada.
  • Typically, the Board meets six times per year, four of which the meetings are held in Regina at Farm Credit Canada's corporate office. The other two meetings are held in different parts of the country. Directors are expected to attend meetings in person with the total time commitment including travel and preparation time estimated at 30 days a year.
