Vice-Chairperson, Copyright Board,

Appointment Opportunities

We know that our country is stronger — and our government more effective — when decision-makers reflect Canada’s diversity. The Government of Canada will use an appointment process that is transparent and merit-based, strives for gender parity, and ensures that Indigenous Canadians and minority groups are properly represented in positions of leadership. We will continue to search for Canadians who reflect the values that we all embrace: inclusion, honesty, fiscal prudence, and generosity of spirit. Together, we will build a government as diverse as Canada.

The overarching goal of the Minister of Innovation, Science and Economic Development is to help Canadian businesses grow, innovate and export so that they can create good quality jobs and wealth for Canadians.

The Government of Canada is currently seeking applications from diverse and talented Canadians from across the country who are interested in the following position:

Vice-Chairperson (full-time position)

Copyright Board Canada

The Copyright Board Canada is an economic regulatory body that derives its mandate from the Copyright Act. As a quasi-judicial tribunal, the Board is empowered to establish, either mandatorily or at the request of an interested party, the royalties to be paid for the use of copyrighted works when the administration of such works is entrusted to a collective society. The Copyright Board Canada also has the right to supervise agreements between users and licensing bodies and issues licenses when the copyright owner cannot be located.

The Copyright Board Canada has been central to the most high-profile copyright matters of the past decade, namely: music streaming, peer-to-peer file sharing, internet service provider liability, iPod or other device levies, and the use of literary works. The Vice-Chairperson is the Chief Executive Officer of the Board and is responsible for planning, administering, monitoring and evaluating the main activities of the Board. The Vice-Chairperson also participates in hearings, analyzes and weighs evidence, and works with other Members to render joint decisions that provide for fair and equitable royalties to be paid to copyright collective societies for the use of works protected by copyright.

Further details about the organization and its activities can be found on the Copyright Board Canada's website.

Candidates must apply online by 11:59 p.m. Eastern Time on October 2, 2017, via the Governor in Council Appointments website. Your cover letter should be addressed to the Assistant Secretary to the Deputy Director of Selection Processes, Senior Personnel Secretariat, Privy Council Office, and should be sent only through the online application.
