Chief Executive Officer (full-time position)

Canadian Dairy Commission

The Canadian Dairy Commission is a federal Crown corporation. Funded by the federal government, producers and the marketplace, the Commission strives to balance and serve the interests of all dairy stakeholders - producers, processors, further processors, exporters, consumers and governments.

Under the Canadian Dairy Commission Act, the Commission's legislated objectives are to provide efficient producers of milk and cream with the opportunity to obtain a fair return for their labour and investment, and to provide consumers of dairy products with a continuous and adequate supply of dairy products of high quality. As a central facilitator for the Canadian dairy industry and administrator of national dairy programs, the Commission works closely with industry stakeholders represented by organizations such as the Dairy Farmers of Canada, Dairy Processors Association of Canada, Consumers’ Association of Canada and provincial milk marketing boards and agencies.

Salary Range: $149,500 - $175,800 (CEO-2)

Position location: Ottawa, Ontario

To be considered for this position, please provide examples from your career that clearly demonstrate how you meet the following requirements in your application:

Education and Experience

  • A degree from a recognized university in a relevant field of study or a combination of equivalent education, job-related training and experience;
  • Corporate governance or financial certification training would be considered an asset;
  • Significant management experience at the senior executive level in a private or public sector organization;
  • Experience in dealing with senior levels of government;
  • Experience leading the day-to-day operations of an organization;
  • Experience in maintaining effective relationships with, and balancing the interest of multiple stakeholders, including consumers;
  • Experience in strategic planning and financial management; and
  • Experience working with a board of directors.

If you are selected for an interview, the following criteria will be assessed:

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Knowledge of the Canadian Dairy Commission’s mandate, legislative framework, program and activities;
  • An in-depth understanding of supply management in Canada, preferably of the Canadian dairy industry and related issues;
  • Knowledge of public policy issues related to the dairy industry;
  • Knowledge of effective board processes and committee structures;
  • Demonstrated vision and leadership skills;
  • Excellent managerial and motivational skills;
  • Strong negotiating skills;
  • Ability to bridge differing viewpoints and manage conflicts when they arise;
  • Ability to develop and maintain effective relationships with government and industry partners as well as with stakeholders;
  • Ability to grasp complex issues and their potential full impact; and
  • Superior communication skills, both orally and in writing.

Language Requirements

Proficiency in both official languages would be preferred.

Eligibility Factors and Conditions of Employment

In your application, it will be important that you confirm you meet the following requirements:

  • The successful candidate must be prepared to relocate to the National Capital Region or to a location within a reasonable commuting distance;
  • The successful candidate must be willing to travel frequently throughout Canada; and
  • A member of the Commission ceases to hold office on reaching the age of seventy years (statutory).

You will be subject to the Conflict of Interest Act.
