National Gallery of Canada

The National Gallery of Canada is one of the world's most respected art institutions, renowned for its exceptional collection of approximately 65,000 works of art, revered for its scholarship, and applauded for its unique ability to engage audiences of all ages and all levels of artistic knowledge. Over the years, the National Gallery of Canada has built a world-class collection spanning all periods of Canadian art, richly representing works by Europeans—from old masters to contemporary artists—and notable for strong holdings in photography, Inuit art and contemporary American art. The mandate of the National Gallery of Canada is to develop, maintain, and make known, throughout Canada and internationally, a collection of works of art, both historic and contemporary, with special, but not exclusive, reference to Canada. The Gallery also has the mandate to further knowledge, understanding, and enjoyment of art in general among all Canadians. The Gallery is accountable to Parliament through the Minister of Canadian Heritage.

The National Gallery of Canada is governed by a Board of Trustees composed of a Chairperson, a Vice-Chairperson and nine other trustees. The Board has the overall responsibility for stewardship of the Corporation and is expected to provide strategic guidance to management and to oversee the activities of the institution. It has a duty to act in the best interests of the Corporation and to exercise care and due diligence. The Board is also responsible to evaluate the performance of the Chief Executive Officer on an annual basis. If the Chairperson is absent or unable to act or if the office of the Chairperson is vacant, the Vice-Chairperson has all the powers, and may exercise and perform all the duties and functions of the Chairperson.

Per Diem: $275 - $325

Annual Retainer: $7,100 - $8,400

Official Languages and Diversity

Education and Experience

  • A degree from a recognized university in a relevant field of study or an acceptable combination of education, job-related training and/or experience;
  • Experience in the development of strategies, objectives, plans, best business practices and in corporate governance;
  • Experience on a board of directors/trustees of a public, private or not-for-profit sector organization;
  • Experience at the senior management level within the private or public sector would be considered an asset;
  • Experience in the communications, social media, and media sector, such as the distribution of creative and digital content, would be considered an asset;
  • Experience in fundraising activities within cultural institutions and developing self-generated revenues would be considered an asset; and
  • Experience working or volunteering with organizations in the cultural sector, preferably in the visual arts field, would be considered an asset.

If you are selected for an interview, the following criteria will be assessed:

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Knowledge of the legislative framework, mandate and activities of the National Gallery of Canada;
  • Knowledge of sound governance principles, strategic planning, and the monitoring and evaluation of performance, and financially literate with knowledge of the federal government's expectations regarding accountability and reporting;
  • Knowledge of the cultural, heritage and/or recreational tourism sectors, or of the evolving public expectations regarding Museums;
  • Knowledge of the federal government's cultural policy priorities and how these relate to the National Gallery of Canada would be considered an asset;
  • Knowledge in the areas of information technology, technological evolution related to digital, the supporting environment of national creative content, government relations, human resources, or promotion and marketing would be an asset;
  • Superior communication skills, both written and oral, and the ability to manage communications with a variety of stakeholders;
  • Ability to assist the Chairperson in carrying out his/her mandate in accordance with the Museums Act;
  • Ability to identify, analyse and define priorities and strategies;
  • Ability to develop and maintain effective working relationships with other Board members and the Board's partners and stakeholders; and
  • Ability to recognize and address emerging issues and trends, to seize opportunities, and to advance ideas and innovation.

Language Requirements

Proficiency in both official languages would be preferred.

Eligibility Factors and Conditions of Employment

In your application, it will be important that you confirm you meet the following requirements:

  • A person is not eligible to be appointed as Vice-Chairperson of the Board if that person is not a Canadian citizen (statutory).
  • The successful candidate must attend the meetings of the Board of Trustees and key Gallery events:
    • The Board meets four times per year; each meeting is generally two consecutive days in duration. Three meetings are held in Ottawa and one additional meeting is often held in another Canadian city;
    • There are approximately ten teleconference meetings of short-duration (30 minutes) throughout the year; and
    • In the absence of the Chairperson, the Vice-Chairperson attends major exhibition openings at the National Gallery of Canada, approximately three to four each year.
  • The successful candidate should expect to commit to the position an average of four weeks annually.
