Canadian High Arctic Research Station Act


The organization and administration of Canadian High Arctic Research Station are to be overseen by a Board of Directors consisting of nine members, including a Chairperson and a Vice-Chairperson. The members of the Board are to be appointed by the Governor in Council to hold office on a part-time basis.

Members of the Board are appointed to hold office during pleasure for terms of up to five years. A member of the Board is eligible for reappointment for a second term of office in the same or another capacity.

In the event of the absence or incapacity of the Chairperson, or a vacancy in that office, the Vice-Chairperson acts as Chairperson.

The President of Canadian High Arctic Research Station is to be appointed by the Governor in Council to hold office during pleasure on a full-time basis for a term of up to five years.

The President is eligible for reappointment for one or more further terms of office.

In the event of the absence or incapacity of the President, or a vacancy in that office, the Board must appoint an employee of the Canadian High Arctic Research Station to act as President. However, the acting President may act as President for longer than 90 days only with the approval of the Governor in Council.

Eligibility/Conflicts

Persons appointed to the Board must have knowledge or experience that will assist Canadian High Arctic Research Station in carrying out its purpose, having regard to the ethnic, linguistic and regional diversity of Canada’s Arctic.

Remuneration

Members of the Board are to be paid the remuneration that is fixed by the Governor in Council.

Members of the Board are entitled to be paid reasonable travel and living expenses while absent from their ordinary place of residence in the course of their duties under this Act.

The President is to be paid the remuneration that is fixed by the Governor in Council.

The President is entitled to be paid reasonable travel and living expenses while absent from his or her ordinary place of work in the course of his or her duties under this Act.
